1 Million for Work Flexibility has more than 100 organizations on board to date as part of our coalition—and counting. We’re pleased to share more information about our supporter ThirdPath Institute in today’s “Spotlight On…” post.

ThirdPath Institute’s mission is to assist individuals, families, and organizations in finding new ways to redesign work to create time for family, community, and other life priorities. ThirdPath has also developed a growing community of individuals, leaders and organizations to influence wider change. With over fifteen years of expertise to draw from, their ultimate goal is to support a new mind-set where everyone can follow a “third path”—an integrated approach to success at work and success outside of work.

Instead of adding family or other responsibilities to a job that is already demanding too much of you, ThirdPath helps employees look for “win-win” flexibility so they can succeed in both work and life. Although this can be applied to any stage in life, when balancing work and the care of children, ThirdPath encourages parents to share in the joys and responsibilities of caregiving. They also help people learn how to prioritize their goals, both at work and home.

Out-dated norms at our workplaces and in our homes often mean women, more than men, are engaged in care work. Done in isolation, or done on top of demanding and inflexible jobs, these additional responsibilities can feel more exhausting than joyful. However, ThirdPath emphasizes that when caregiving is done in partnership, it becomes a solution that benefits everyone: caregivers get a respite; workers return to work recharged and refreshed.

ThirdPath is adept in helping people design solutions for their own unique situation—whether they want time for children, aging adults, or other life passions. The first step is creating time to imagine and plan. ThirdPath President and Founder Jessica DeGroot explains, “If you are trying to balance work and family, we help couples learn how to create a ‘team approach’ at home. But whatever the reason, we encourage people to not give up too quickly! Trying a more flexible approach at work, or creating a team approach at home, may not work right from the start. But keeping your eyes on the end goal—how everyone can gain from these changes—you will discover in time you will succeed. There really is a ‘third path’—an integrated approach to work and life that’s just right for you”

Individuals, families, and managers alike can all reap great benefits from the free Thursdays with ThirdPath series. These webinars, held on the second Thursday of each month, showcase how an integrated approach to work and personal life can be the best option for everyone.  1MFWF has been pleased to cohost some of these webinars with ThirdPath—watch the recordings here: Finding Your Sweet Spot at Home and at Work and A Conversation with Anne-Marie Slaughter on Women, Men, Work, and Family.

ThirdPath also has hundreds of examples of families who have learned how to share in the care of their families and earning an income. For more information, sign up for their monthly newsletter and check out the many free resources on their website.

DeGroot also noted, “Flexibility at work is an important part of helping individuals take the steps they need to create their own unique solution to balancing work and life—a solution that benefits themselves, their families and their employer. 1MFWF is playing a central role in the movement for change around flexibility, and ThirdPath Institute is proud to partner with them in this much needed change in the way we work.”
