Since 1973, the Connecticut Women’s Education and Legal Fund (CWEALF) has worked tirelessly to advocate for the rights of women and girls. As a statewide nonprofit organization, CWEALF has advocated to create a society in which women of all ages, especially those who have been underserved, can not only survive, but thrive.
Spotlight on Connecticut Women’s Education and Legal Fund
Some of the issues that CWEALF has focused on include equal pay, sex discrimination, and equal credit. They have also played a pivotal role in advancing policy changes in areas such as paid sick days, domestic violence issues, marriage equality, and discrimination protections based on gender identity.
As demand for its services outreached its ability to provide personalized assistance, CWEALF began a restructuring program designed to expand its existing informational, referral, and educational outreach services. That way, the agency could offer counseling and information to women and girls in need within the state of Connecticut.
One of CWEALF’s campaign, the Campaign for a Working Connecticut, is determined to help in the development of the workforce solutions that will positively impact the state’s economic standing. Two of its major goals include enabling workers to attain economic sufficiency, and also to address the problem of a “middle skills” job gap by informing employers about the benefits of investing in their workers through programs and other workforce solutions.
Additionally, the CWEALF is heading the Campaign for Paid Family Leave. The coalition, comprised of more than 65 organizations from Connecticut, is advocating for paid time off due to sickness, (as well as those in a caregiver role), and the birth or adoption of a child. With paid family and medical leave, workers will ultimately be protected from any potential financial burdens, and be able to maintain their work-life balance as they care for their families and work, too.
