Between setting your own schedule and not having to schlep into an office each and every day, nothing beats working from home. Nothing. But there are times, though, when you might find yourself missing office life. We’ve picked five funny office moments on film that may make you nostalgic for your office days—or not…
9 To 5
Who can forget the hilarious 1980 film starring Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin, and Dolly Parton as three frustrated office workers dealing with a boss from hell? There are so many memorable moments from the film, but perhaps one of the funniest is when Violet (Tomlin) thinks she’s poisoned her boss, Mr. Hart (Dabney Coleman), by accidentally putting rat poison in his coffee instead of Skinny ‘N Sweet. What ensues is comic genius, as the three friends try to cover up the “murder” of their boss and wind up taking over the company and instituting new rules—including adding a flexible schedule policy!
If there were ever a movie that depicts office life in all its glory, Office Space is it. Peter Gibbons, a frustrated and bored IT worker, stares at his desk all day instead of working and deals with his micromanaging and annoying boss, Bill Lumbergh. The scene where he comes down on Peter about putting a cover on his TPS reports is priceless.
A sports agent with a heart, Jerry Maguire (Tom Cruise) discovers something about himself and decides to share it with his office. Unfortunately, he winds up losing his job and then sets off on his own as an independent agent. When he has a phone meeting with his only client, Rod Tidwell (Cuba Gooding, Jr.), Rod forces Jerry to say—and scream—that infamous (and hilarious) line: “Show me the money!”
The Devil Wears Prada
Maybe having access to a Vogue-esque closet is something you’ve only imagined. But for Andy Sachs (Anne Hathaway), the dream of becoming a true journalist becomes a nightmare when she becomes a junior personal assistant to the wretched Miranda Priestly (Meryl Streep), the Editor-in-Chief of fashion magazine Runway. From working crazy hours, to finishing Miranda’s twin daughters’ science project, to bringing her the “Book” late at night, Andy is forced to do it all—and look fabulous at the same time. One of the funnier moments is when Miranda asks Andy to get her skirts, and when Andy questions what type of skirt, Miranda replies icily, “Please go bore someone else with your questions.”
It’s hard to pick just one funny moment from the hit TV series The Office. With its odd assortment of disgruntled characters, The Office became a show that resonates with virtually every person ever forced to live the cubicle life. Fortunately, there are plenty of clips on YouTube to make you chuckle, including the compilation below.
